Our Mission

At The Natural Classroom, our mission is to connect children to the natural world.

At The Natural Classroom, we are dedicated to fostering deep and lasting connections between children and the natural world. Research shows that regular, meaningful time outdoors supports physical health, sharpens the mind, and nurtures a lifelong appreciation for nature.

Our programs are designed to spark children’s innate curiosity, integrating foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and science through immersive, nature-based experiences. We empower children through hands-on learning, encourage confidence through exploration, and build a strong sense of community through shared outdoor adventures. In doing so, we are nurturing the next generation of caretakers, critical thinkers, and problem-solvers.

What is a Forest School?

Forest School is an innovative educational approach that takes learning outside, rain or shine. Rooted in nature, this model encourages children to explore, play, and learn in dynamic outdoor environments that change with the seasons and weather.

A hallmark of Forest School is its use of natural materials—sticks, stones, leaves, and mud—instead of conventional toys. These open-ended, ‘loose parts’ inspire imagination and collaboration, helping children develop communication and problem-solving skills as they assign meaning and function together.

Outdoor classrooms, free from walls and ceilings, offer a calmer, less overstimulating environment than indoor spaces, reducing stress and encouraging focus. High adult-to-child ratios ensure children can safely engage in activities that involve manageable risk, like climbing trees, building shelters, or learning to light fires.

In this setting, adults act as guides rather than instructors. Children are given the time and space to explore at their own pace, take initiative, and assess risks for themselves. This nurtures independence, resilience, and a strong sense of self.
